In case the news gets picked up by spam filters, Viagra Boys is back with a third album, continuing the acerbic aesthetic and swaggering satire of street worms and Jazz Wellness. The prehistoric title should mislead no one: cave world is about the here and now – a world built by internet trolls and intellectual dwarfs who think civilization has reached its peak before it actually begins. Vocalist Sebastian Murphy harnesses these contradictions for some of Viagra Boys’ most penetrating lyrics to date, embodying the warped perspective of anti-vaxxers (scary crawlers), anarcho-primitivist (Troglodyte) and versatile conspiratorial gibbons (Back to Monke).

At the beating heart of all these unsavory character sketches is the toxic masculinity skewered in the Swedish band’s tongue-in-cheek name. From the opening strains of baby criminal (from the same gene pool as Pearl Jam’s make the evolution), the thematic basis of the disc, Man as a barely evolved organism, emerges from a primordial soup of syncopated grooves and screeching saxophone. Through 12 perfectly produced post-punk selections, Murphy growls at these men who spread hate online, bring guns to work and spout nonsense around vaccines: “Our kids are growing up with lizard gills and chicken hairs. animals !

The Viagra Boys administer another dose of musical adventure, ditching the country nods of Jazz Wellness for Beck-style drum patterns (Big boy) and even some disc scratches (Back to Monke). Dog lovers might be disappointed to find the previous albums. Best of Show interludes replaced by glitch instrumentals (cave hole, earth globe and Human error) which once again highlights the stupidity of using a computer to demand the destruction of society. Nowhere is this said better than on the second single Troglodyte, a sharp-tongued critique of a crackpot’s aspiration to the hunter-gatherer lifestyle that would literally eat him alive. If that’s where the conspirator’s red pill leads, give us the little blue one every time.
