Music therapy groups for people with dementia will resume in October and places are available for those interested to attend an initiation session without obligation.

Together in Sound is a free music therapy project for people with dementia and their carers which has been running in Saffron Walden since 2017.

It is run by Saffron Hall Trust and the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU).

The program is open to anyone diagnosed with dementia to attend alongside a caregiver or companion.

Applications are open to interested participants who will be invited to attend a trial session on Friday 30 September at Salvation Army Hall on Abbey Lane, Saffron Walden.

Sessions will then run for 10 weeks starting October 7 and will take place in the Salvation Army Hall.

This October also marks the start of the new Together in Sound groups in Braintree, after a successful initiation course over the summer.

Braintree Together in Sound groups will run on Thursdays for 10 weeks from October 6, at the Braintree Museum, Essex.

Together in Sound aims to bring the power of music to people with dementia and their companions.

It focuses on co-creating and listening to music with the goal of supporting communication, relationships, and improving quality of life through a collaborative group process.

Russell Smith, from Quendon, and his wife Brenda, who has dementia, have enjoyed attending Together in Sound in Saffron Walden for several years.

Russell said: “What I have witnessed in these sessions is quite remarkable; people who seem to have lost interest in life, come to life.

“It’s the impact that music can have and it seems to me that a special place in the brain is awakened by certain pieces of music. Seeing a loved one relive past memories through music is such an uplifting experience. ”

Another member of an established Together in Sound group in Saffron Walden said: “Thank you for all the support you give us, the opportunities to be friends, to enjoy the music and to sing.”
