Here’s how to reuse the Netflix button on the new Shield TV remote
The all new Shield TV and Shield TV Pro 2019 are now available and await all those people who have been patiently waiting for a real refreshment. Fortunately, the remote has undergone substantial improvements, including the addition of several new buttons. While most of them help with browsing and playing, there’s that Netflix button that’s not for everyone. If you consider yourself a non-Netflixer, or just want to use the button for something even more useful, it’s actually very easy to remap.
The simple tool to achieve this is an application called Button Mapper by flar2. We already highlighted this app when Samsung thought it wise to include a dedicated Bixby button on the Galaxy S8 and the Pixel 2 got a squeeze gesture to launch Assistant and then it came back as part of the discussion on blocking Google apps that claim to be Accessibility Services. Fortunately, Button Mapper is still there.
Remapping the Netflix button is pretty quick and straightforward, but to save you a minute of digging, here are the steps:
- Install and launch Button Mapper on your Shield (or other device)
- You will be asked to activate it as an accessibility service, which you need to do.
- Open the “Add buttons” page, select “Add a button” and press the Netflix button on your remote.
- Choose the newly added button from the list and enable the setting to customize it.
You’ll likely also see a screen informing you that some features are only for business users – those who paid for the in-app purchase – but at this time the ability to remap that button doesn’t require upgrading.
You can now configure the button to do just about anything. Standard functions appear in the list by default, such as accessing the Recents screen or triggering screenshots. If you want the remapped button to launch another app, change some system settings, or access other more exotic custom functions, just arrow up to the category selector at the top for more options.
Those with different TVs or Android TVs can also use Button Mapper, but be aware that there may be some bugs. For example, I tested with my Sony Bravia TV (2015) and found that it would still launch the Netflix app, but also trigger the mapped action, which Plex launched. It turns out that it works well since the Plex app starts second and puts Netflix in the background.
Freehand for people remapping Netflix on Plex … or maybe your favorite weather app?
